Well it is that time of year again when all the big winter waves and exciting contest descend on the North Shore of Oahu for two months of non stop action. The Vans Triple Crown of Surfing is the most prestigious series of Surfing competitions in the world and it all takes place on this seven-mile miracle of coastline. Professional surfers from around the globe compete in World Tour Events that are located at Haleiwa’s Alii beach park, Sunset Beach and Pipeline. Here are some tips to make for all you spectators coming to enjoy visiting the North Shore.

1. Bring a chair or beach towel it is much more relaxing than sitting on the sand.

2. Wear sunscreen, even if it is over cast the sun can leave a nasty burn.

3. Always ask a lifeguard if it is safe swimming conditions. Winter surf can go from 5 feet to 25 feet in a day so be safe.

4. Keep babies and small children far away from the shoreline, rouge waves are common during the winter months. Check safe swimming beach on Oahu for kids.

5. Plan on little parking and traffic. People rent bikes on the North Shore from Paradise Baby Co. Bike rentals in Sunset Beach are booked well in advance and can be delivered directly to your door.

6. Don’t leave valuable in your can or unattended at the beach.

7. Slow down, this isn’t the mainland. Be courteous to other drivers and pedestrians.

8. Bring a snack with you, the events don’t have any on site food so unless you are leaving the action then it is good to have a bite to eat handy.

There are many good restaurants on the North Shore. Haleiwa Town has something for everyone. If there is a down day of surfing this is also a great town to hit for some island shopping. With several great surf shops like Surf and Sea and Surf and Sail. There is also an amazing dress shop called Guava right next to the Clark Little Gallery (where you can pick up amazing photos or the North Shore waves).

Check with the North Shore Chamber of Commerce for vacation rental companies North Shore Oahu. Paradise Baby Co. delivers baby equipment rentals on North Shore daily.
What I get asked about traveling to Oahu with kids is “what are the best beaches to take kids?” So, let me give you a quick run down of in my opinion the best beaches on Oahu for kids.

Delivering baby equipment rentals on Oahu our delivery van gets to cruise by some amazing beaches. Oahu is known for its beautiful white sand beaches, spectacular volcanic mountain ranges. As the owner of Paradise Baby Co I speak with moms and dads everyday on the phone that are hiring our baby equipment rental services, and one of the main questions I get asked about traveling to Oahu with kids is “what are the best beaches to take kids?” So, let me give you a quick run down of in my opinion the best beaches on Oahu for kids.

Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve

Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve is the by far the most popular place to snorkel on Oahu. The protected cove has been a Marine Life Conservation District since the 1960’s, which makes it illegal to fish or remove any marine life from the Bay. Hanauma Bay offers clam and safe swimming conditions, making the Preserve the ultimate playground for your young marine scientist to explore the reef and underwater world of Hawaii. The Bay is a short drive out side of Waikiki just 10 miles East along the scenic coastline. Hanauma is curved ancient volcanic crater. What kids wouldn’t be thrilled to swim around in a volcanic crater? The Bay is full of marine life, including turtles, rays and over 400 different types of tropical fish have been recorded at the park. There is an entrance fee of $5.00 and parking is $1.00. The park can fill up quick during holidays and summer with only 300 parking spaces available. Open from 6:00am-7:00pm and is closed on Tuesday. There is Snorkel gear available for rent at the beach as well as a snack shop. All of the facilities at the Hanauma Bay are designed to be fully accessible to the disabled guests and wheel chairs are available free at the information center. For families traveling to Hawaii with kids this is a must-do activity!

Kailua Beach

Kailua Beach is located on the East side of the island. Kailua Beach Park has been called one of the best beaches in the United States and I couldn’t agree more. The park has it all, offering visitors parking, showers, picnic areas and ample shade. The fine white sand beach stretches for over 2 miles and there are lifeguards on duty. The shore break is generally calm and offers safe swimming conditions year round. If there is a hazard, a sign will be posted at the beach. Jellyfish can be blown in when trade winds are strong so always ask a lifeguard if there are any warnings that day. Typically Kailua beach is not crowded during the week but can get busy on weekends and during Holidays. There are several kayaking rental companies in Kailua Town that can set you and the family up for a day of paddling around the pristine waters of the bay. After spending the day at the beach there are many great family friendly restaurants in Kailua to choose from.

The Lagoons at Ko Olina (year round calm waters)

Located on the West Side of Oahu the lagoons at Ko Olina offer some of the safest swimming for kids on Oahu. There are 4 separate lagoons that are protected by an outer rock barrier. They are sand bottom and surrounded by grass lawns that are perfect for a picnicking. There are lifeguards on duty at all the swimming areas as well as beach gear rentals available. The Disney Aulani Resort is the newest addition to the Ko Olina Resort area. I have heard from several people that rented baby equipment at Aulani say that Aunty’s Beach House is a great place for kids to hand out beach side. Also available at Disney Aulani are Kayaks, stand up paddle boards and snorkel sets. If you don’t feel like packing a lunch there are lots of award winning restaurants to choose from both at Disney, Ko Olina and the Ihilani hotels.

Waimea Bay (spring through summer)

Waimea Bay is famous for it’s gigantic winter surf that can reach 50 plus feet during the months of Oct- March. Surfers come from all over the world to take on the monster waves of the North Shore, which can be quite exciting to watch. However, for many of us locals we look forward to the calm conditions when there are no waves. As the large winter swells diminish, spring thru summer time at the bay could not be more fun for a family with kids. Waimea Bay has some of the most beautiful clear picturesque water on the island, making for great diving and swimming conditions. The small park has restrooms and lifeguards on duty year round. Be sure to bring snacks or stop off in Haleiwa Town for food on your way to Waimea. The closest food is a grocery store called Foodland about a mile away. This is a beach that you will always want to check with the lifeguard before swimming.

Waikiki Beach (year round fun in the sun)

Finally, one of the most famous beaches in the world, Waikiki Beach, is an amazing beach for families on Oahu. If you are visiting Oahu chances are you are staying in Waikiki and lucky for you have the safest swimming beach right outside your hotel. The wonderful white sand beach offers not only calm swimming conditions but lots of great beach activities. For older children that can swim surf lessons are just about the most fun you can have in Hawaii. The beach boys of Waikiki are world renowned for their water safety skills and are all amazing surf instructors. The gentle waves of Waikiki make it the ideal place to learn to surf. Canoe rides are also a blast and you can book a ride next to the Royal Hawaiian Hotel on the beach. This is an activity the whole family can enjoy. After a long day at the beach locals and visitor alike favorite thing to do is walk straight off the beach into Dukes at the Outrigger for sunset time. There is great live Hawaiian music and pupu’s (appetizers) every night.

Whether you are staying in Waikiki, Disney Aulani, or Kailua visiting the North Shore of Oahu for a day trip is a must for families traveling to Oahu with kids. The North Shore offers visitors a chance to experience the countryside of Oahu at its best. Starting your adventure in Historical Haleiwa town and then cruzing the coast to some of the most stunning beaches in the world is a chance you wont want to miss.

Wherever you are staying on island the North Shore is no more than 45 minutes away. Making it a perfect day trip on Oahu. You can rent a car for the day or find a tour bus like the surf bus to take you and your family. After exiting the H1 freeway you will make your way down thru the Dole Pineapple fields down on to the North Shore. Save your visit to the Dole Plantation for another day since you will want every minute you have to explore the North Shore.

The first stop is Historic Haleiwa Town. Haleiwa is the gateway to the countryside of the North Shore. It is filled with excellent lunch time dining options whether you are looking for a healthy organic lunch at the Beet Box, tasty burger at the famous Kua Aina, a delicious mahi mahi fish taco at Luibuenos or hit town for brunch at the local surfers favorite Café Haleiwa there is something for everyone.

After you grab a bite to eat midday is a good time to hit the shops and stay out of the sun or grab a shave ice from Matsumoto’s. A favorite store for visitors and locals alike is the Growing Keiki. (Keiki means children in Hawaiian) Specializing in Hawaiian style fashionable infant and kids wear, the store has wonderful selection of unique gifts, books, quilts and adorable clothing for traveling families. Mommy will enjoy shopping at Guava next to the Clark Little Gallery. Guava has beautiful clothes, accessories and beach wear, a must stop for any fashion loving mom.

Time to hit the beaches of the North Shore! During the winter months you can expect big surf and lots of surfers from around the world to be taking advantage of it. The Triple Crown of Surfing contests run from Oct- Jan every year and hold events at Alii Beach Park in Haleiwa, Sunset Beach and Pipeline. If you are visiting during these months be sure and check out the action. Summer time and fall usually offer the best time for visitors to experience the calm waters of the North Shore. Haleiwa Beach Park is located at the edge of town and is always calm. You can book your surf lessons or stand up paddling lessons here at have a blast trying something new. Often times you will see local island artist Michael Hemperly and his famous 1948 Chevy woody car in the parking lot waiting for the windsurfing to get good. He is always happy to meet new people and share a story.

Moving on up the road you will reach Laniakea Beach. Over the past few years this beach has gotten very crowded because tour busses drop large groups of people off to see the turtles. The beach is quite small and not very well equipped to handle the large amount of traffic. If you want to see turtles on the beach stay in Haleiwa Town and head over to the Alii Beach Park you have a great chance of seeing a turtle there as well. Better yet book a whale watch or snorking adventure out of Haleiwa Harbor and you are sure to see lots of wildlife.

As you continue up the coast Waimea Bay is your next big stop and a great place to spend the afternoon for swimming from April-Sept. The bay often has visiting dolphins premier and there is plenty of beautiful tropical fish to see. During the winter months this beach will become very dangerous and not safe for swimming. Waves bigger that 2 story houses will pound the shores. If you are visiting during the winter always check with a lifeguard before entering the water.

Just about a quarter mile past Waimea Bay is Sharks Cove. Don’t let the name scare you this wonderful protected cove area is an ideal place to visit during the calm summer months for safe family swimming on Oahu. Babies will enjoy playing in the tide pools and young children will love exploring the rocks and pools for sea life. For a snorkeling adventure just step out side the protected cove into the ocean and you will find a world of beautiful live coral, tropical fishes and gorgeous caves. Locals and visitors alike spend many hours diving the waters of Sharks Cove in tranquil bliss. If you didn’t eat lunch in Haleiwa then Sharks Cove grill has some tasty food at reasonable prices.

The final hot spot to hit is world famous Sunset Beach. Located about 3 miles North of Sharks Cove, Sunset is the largest stretch of white sand beach on the North Shore. In fact, you can walk from Sunset on the beach all the way to Sharks Cove! However, you won’t want to do much walking once you step into the beautiful warm sand you won’t want to go anywhere. Sunset is famous for its big winter waves and the ability to watch the sunset into the water all year long.

Another great place to watch the sunset at the end of the day is back in Haleiwa Town at Haleiwa Joes. Located right next to the Haleiwa harbor it is great place to watch the afternoon fishing boats come into dock as the sun sets in the background. Haleiwa Joes offers child friendly dining and offers delicious locally caught fish, steak and great appetizers. Alternatively, Café Haleiwa is open Thursday-Saturday and cooks up some tasty dishes using locally grown produce and cattle. It is BYOB so you can swing into the Wine Stop next door and pick up juice, beer or wine for dinner. Luibuenos Fish Market also serves a delicious Mexican food dinner 7 nights a week and is located in the center of town.

Your day trip to the North Shore will sure to be filled with lots of great food, warm white sand beaches, sea life and lots of great memories. Make sure you take the time to take a drive and experience the countryside of the island, it is something you will not want to miss.

Traveling to Oahu with a baby can be dangerous if you don't keep them safe from the sun. Oahu baby equipment rental Paradise Baby Co. shares some tips for traveling with kids to Hawaii and avoiding sunburns.

Aloha family’s traveling to Oahu with kids. Traveling to Oahu with a baby or young child is a great idea for a family vacation. People often ask whether there are dangers when taking a baby to Hawaii. Well, yes there is one very important thing that you should be aware of that can be dangerous to not only babies and young children but also adults. THE SUN! Sunburns can be very dangerous to babies under 1 year old. Their skin is very sensitive so it can be burned quickly. A burn can cause pain, swelling and possible heat stroke and skin damage. Here are some helpful tips for traveling to Hawaii with kids and avoiding sunburns.

How can I prevent a sunburn while in Hawaii?

It is important to remember that a child can get burned after only a small amount of exposure as little as 15 minutes. The most dangerous times to be exposed are between 10am and 4pm. ALWAYS put sunscreen on any area of exposed skin. Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before you head out for an activity so it is completely absorbed. Reapply sunscreen after anytime spent in water Hats are always a good idea whether at the beach or just out for a ride in the stroller thru Waikiki. Renting a beach cabana or renting an umbrella for your trip will give you added shade and sun protection.

What do I do if my child gets a sunburn?

Sunburns with infants can be very serious. If your baby is under a year old and gets sunburn while in Hawaii you should call a doctor. If your babies skin is just a little pink then it is just a mild sunburn and a doctor is most likely not needs. However is symptoms include swelling, fever, headache, pain, vomiting or blisters in the first 24 hours then seek medical attention immediately.

How to sooth a mild sunburn with a baby?

When your little one gets too much sun it is important to give them lots of fluids, including water, breast milk and juice if you child is older. Cold washcloths and cool baths help sooth burned skin. Aloe Vera is a nice moisturizing gel that will allow heat to escape and helps cool the skin as well. On Oahu there are lots of ABC markets in Waikiki and there are sunscreens and lotions can be purchased.

Whether you are visiting in Winter or Summer, Hawaii has sun year round so be prepared with lots of sun protection for your family. Below are Paradise Baby Co. hot picks for families traveling to Oahu with kids that want to avoid sunburns. Have a great trip!
I just ended up renting a jogging stroller from them (which was in wonderful, clean shape) but found after that you can rent anything from sand toys, sun tents cribs – you name it they had it. They were on time and made delivery and return very simple at a low cost that made my vacation that much more enjoyable. I would highly recommend them when traveling to Oahu with kids.”

Summer baggage fees skyrocket costing traveler hundreds of dollars. American Airline new policy no large strollers checked at gate. Renting baby equipment has never been a smarter choice.

Paradise Baby Co. has yet another reason to rent baby equipment on Oahu. American Airlines announced June 1st that passengers will now be required to check large strollers at the ticket counter instead of the gate. American Airlines Ban on strollers now joins United who has a similar ban on large strollers. The reason being that BOB strollers and other large strollers were to difficult for agents to manage. Mishandling can lead to broken and or damaged strollers.

The high cost of travel has been seen not only in airfare this summer but in checked bag fees. Baggage fees are increasingly important to airlines because of the rising fuel costs. Profits from baggage fees in the first nine months of 2010 totaled $2.57 billion dollars according to the Transportation Department. Travelers are now faced with fees for not only overweight baggage but size and or length of a bag can even cost you. Shockingly United Airlines baggage fee charges $400.00 for its extra heavy bags. Hawaiian Airlines fees for flights between the Continental US and Hawaii charges $25 for the first bag and $35 for the second. The

When you add up the luggage for a family traveling to Oahu with kids we are taking about some serious baggage. Just another reason to use baby equipment rental when traveling this summer. If you are going to have to pay hundreds of dollars to bring all your gear with you then why not save the hassle and money by renting baby gear. Paradise Baby Co. has crib rentals on Oahu, car seat rentals, stroller rentals, toys, bikes and so much more. So if you are visiting Oahu with baby or young children let Paradise Baby Co. take care of all you rental needs. Check out our Baby Travel Pros for other great companies. Have a great summer!
